The Miss Universe international beauty contest (@missuniverse) kicks off Saturday night at Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Russia. Contestants representing 86 countries will compete in three categories: swimsuit, evening gown and interview. Founded in 1952 by California clothing company Pacific Mills, the pageant has since become a global event. Hundreds of millions of people in over 80 countries watch it each year to cheer on their country’s contestant.

Although the official event begins on Saturday night, the costume show—perhaps the most vibrant part of the contest—took place last Sunday night. Contestants showcased elaborate costumes representative of their countries. Some highlights include:

Ukraine’s Tunnel of Love (Тунель Кохання)

To see more photos and videos from Instagrammers who made the trek to the Tunnel of Love, be sure to visit the Тунель Кохання / Tunnel of Love location page.

Three times a day, a train chugs through Ukraine’s Tunnel of Love (Тунель Кохання) transporting wood to a nearby fiberboard factory. The train molds the surrounding trees into a natural tunnel with each pass through a three-mile forested stretch of rail. The tunnel, nicknamed the Tunnel of Love (Тунель Кохання) has become known as one of the most romantic places in Ukraine. Local legend promises couples who visit the tunnel one wish, provided their intentions are sincere.

The trees are most lush in spring and summer, but this year’s fall colors have brought fresh new hues to the tunnel. Soon, snow will cover the tracks before the green returns in spring.

Cinematic Portraiture with @luciafernandezmuniz

To tune in to Lucía’s portraiture on Instagram, be sure to follow @luciafernandezmuniz.

Lucía Fernández Muñiz (@luciafernandezmuniz) of Madrid, Spain, brings the magic and personality of cinema to a still frame in her portraiture. “Since I was a toddler, I have always had an obsession with films, actors, music and musicians,” she says. “I am still infatuated with some of Marilyn Monroe or Bjork’s portraits.”

Lucía uses her “sweet minimal” style—rich with emotion, color, sensuality and, of course, red lipstick!—to visually evoke the personality of her subjects. “It is amazing what you can reveal from a person when they are in front of a camera. People tell stories with my imagery, and quite often, the stories that inspire me are based on my dreams.”

Want to create a portrait with the energy and pop of Lucía’s work? For Lucía, it’s all about the atmosphere you create: “Give your subject a relaxing and free environment so they can be as natural as possible. I make them laugh, jump, dance… all different kinds of things until they feel comfortable.”
